American Music Festival Series presents ACRONYM

September 21, 2019 | 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Location: First Presbyterian (1604 Arendell Street, Morehead City)

This first rate band brings baroque music alive like no other with their vivid imagination, fancy fiddling and musical humor. To quote Early Music America, “Acronym has fun!” They return by popular demand, having astonished our audiences with their wit and spine-tingling charisma. Their program is titled a “Cabinet of Curiosities – Baroque beyond Handel and Correlli”.

In seventeenth-century Germany, a Wunderkammer (typically translated as “cabinet of curiosities”) was a type of private museum collection in the home of an aristocrat. Always in search of the most fascinating music from this era, ACRONYM has unearthed a large number of previously unrecorded manuscript sonatas written by long-forgotten composers. Many of these composers’ works will surprise the listener with their innovative rhythms and harmonics–extraordinary for their time.

Ticketed event. Tickets may be reserved by calling (252) 342-5034, and are available at the door on the evening of the concert. Tickets may also be obtained through Event bright at https://www.eventbrite.com/o/american-music-festival-3124978792.

Julia (powerhouse funk) @ Cru Wine Bar

September 21, 2019 | 9:00 pm - September 22, 2019 | 1:30 am

On March 1st, 1999, NOAA scientists taking deep ocean recordings with a hydrophone picked up a warbling, cooing noise, which they dubbed ‘Julia’. This mother of the deep has not been caught, always eluding mans’ watching eyes and clutching hands, but her siren call has found its way into our hearts and thus our music.

JULIA. is a four piece funk powerhouse from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Taking inspiration from funk throughout the eras, they present a sound that is both familiar and unique, with influences in 70’s funk and modern hip hop/soul. They just recently returned from touring all over the East Coast, going as far North as Vermont and as far South as the tip of Florida. They are now in the process of writing and recording their debut album, due out in mid 2019.

JULIA. is made up of Torin “Dr. Funkenstein” Alston, Danlee “Moon Dog” Gildersleeve, Todd “The Creature” Davis, and Sean “Count Slapula” Meehan.

Horsing Around: Marsh or Bank Ponies with Rodney Kemp

September 27, 2019 | 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

There be wild ponies on the banks! But why? How could they swim that far out? In a nutshell, they are descended from horses that swam ashore from shipwrecked Spanish galleons which lay broken near our North Carolina coastline in the 17th and 18th centuries. These “Banks” horses, which remain wild, continue to thrive by grazing marsh grasses, and by drinking from freshwater pools after storms. They are unique to the species, and protected by law. Rodney will trot through their origin story, get full rein on the nature of their existence, and then gallop along a history that makes them not only special, but a storied part of our region’s past.
Lunch is served at 11:30 – There is an admission fee. Program only starts 12:00 noon – FREE for CCHS members and a small admission fee for non-members. Call 252-247-7533 ext. 1 or stop by the History Museum by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday prior to the event to reserve your lunch.

The three day festival will feature a variety of events held in Beaufort and will range in size from beer dinners, seminars to the headline event; Beer, Bubbles and BBQ held in downtown Beaufort. Over the course of three days, guests are immersed in a number of beer focused events.

Barefoot Wade @ Cru Wine Bar

September 28, 2019 | 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm

The barefoot musician has best been described as a “One-Man-Caribbean-Jam-Band”. On stage, Wade employs the use of Acoustic and Electric guitars, Bass guitars, Steel Drum, lots of various Percussion, Keyboards, and Kazoos. He is able to play these instruments simultaneously through a process known as “Loop Sampling”. This gives the aural illusion that there is more than one musician jamming on stage. His musical style combines elements of Reggae, Rock, Americana and Comedic Country blended into his own original sound.

Staying Busy!
Wade spends most of his time on the road promoting himself and doing the job of a manager, booking agent, and performer. He enjoys traveling and is always looking to play any city, state or country that he has never played in before. He has a strong sense of adventure, a good work ethic, and a laidback attitude that makes him a pleasure to work with. He regularly plays festivals, beach bars, college parties, fun restaurants and occasionally country bars and parties for motorcycle clubs.

Please come early for the best seats and appetizers

Mikele Buck Band @ Salt

September 28, 2019 | 9:30 pm - September 29, 2019 | 12:00 am

The Voice 2018 contestant Mikele Buck was born in the Hills of West Virginia, where his family was steeped in the traditional music of the Appalachians. Playing drums in rock bands for most of his high school days, after graduation Mikele bought his first guitar. He started writing songs and playing local taverns, bars, and bonfire parties, testing his own songs out on friends and family. His original songs are a blend of all his musical influences, including Steve Earle, Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt and Red-Dirt artists like Randy Rodgers Band and Reckless Kelly. After returning from the Iraq war in 2005, Mikele went to Nashville to record his first CD and established his first band near Greenville NC. This band’s popularity grew and soon they were opening up for major acts such as Jason Aldean and Joe Nichols. From NC night clubs and fairs, the Mikele Buck Band began drawing record crowds of their own. His latest iTunes release has been pouring through car speakers all over the east…

Rubich & Cain @ The Trading Post

October 3, 2019 | 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

New duo at The Trading Post: Rubich & Cain. Ryan Rubich stringer and singer, hailing from Houston TX and calling North Carolina home, he comes to us with nearly 20 years music education and experience in his wake that has kept him busy from coast to coast. It was at an open mic night here along The Crystal Coast where he met percussionist Jared Cain in the late Summer of 2018. Just before fall fell upon them, a Hurricane blew through the area and upset more than a few things. But the one thing Florence did not interrupt is the mission of these music-making friends. Though Cain has been banging out the beats around the area for a couple of years, his roots were nourished in Cleveland, Ohio. He came to our coast in 2004 by way of the military and started taking music more seriously in 2012 and has been playing professionally since. The combination of these two players brings a fresh burst of funky, folk, blues, rock music for fans to enjoy. With Rubich’s rich knowledge of jazz, blues and folk style and Cain’s comfort zone resting on all styles of rock and reggae, the duo plays off each other well.

James Davy @ Cru Wine Bar

October 16, 2019 | 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

In the summer of 2018, songwriter James Davy left his home in Raleigh, North Carolina searching for something more — what for — he still isn’t exactly sure. James traveled through the plains of Oklahoma, up the Pacific coast, and eventually into the dense woods of the Northwest. As he traversed new landscape – of both country and mind – he was searching for “it” while feeling — lost, then found, then lost again.

After months on the road, James realized a personal truth: maybe the answer is not something you simply find, but perhaps something that finds you… like a song perhaps finds the writer. In his song, Personal Archelogy, James tells the story of finding shards of pottery that leads to an awakening “over time, piece by piece, slowly revealing the whole…like broken shards and punctured tires.” In another song, Diner Dawn, James’ lyrics haunt; “In a cloud, a lover’s eye, the golden glow of a diner dawn… the universe in a coffee cup, answers appear in a cream swirl… along a pawn dogs yarn.” Tales unravel, and leave you wanting more of “it”.

Armed with these new songs, stories, and a road-worn heart, James returned to the American South, stopping in Nashville, TN, where he decided to stay. Finding refuge in an old guitar player’s attic, James is currently writing and performing songs in prep for his solo debut.

James also fronts the North Carolina based Brothers Egg.

Rubich & Cain @ The Trading Post

October 19, 2019 | 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Down East Folk Arts Society Concert - Jane Kramer

November 7, 2019 | 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
In keeping with our mission “To Build Community Through Music”, the Down East Folk Arts Society will once again be bringing World Class Singers/Songwriters to Craven County and the Crystal Coast of North Carolina this Fall. We are pleased to announce our 2019 Fall Concert Series which will  begin on September 11, 2019 and run each subsequent month through November 8, 2019.

Lauded by UK music reviewer Three Chords and the Truth as sounding like she was “…born to gypsy poets and raised by Emmylou Harris,” Asheville, North Carolina songstress Jane Kramer has garnered international recognition for the sultry, heartrending originality of her vocals and for the heavy-hitting lyrical eloquence of her songwriting. With deep roots in the musical traditions, culture and lore of her beloved Appalachia, Kramer’s songs are introspective, gracefully gritty and fiercely memorable. They elegantly sweep listeners down the gravel roads and southern coastal highways, midnight truck stops and lonely motel rooms of “hard learning” and lead home to the wooded Blue Ridge Mountains with moving acceptance of our flawed human experience. Kramer’s live performances are equally as poignant and engaging; rich with accessible, warm, often hilarious storytelling and gracefully lifting the veil between audience and performer.

Down East Folk Arts Society presents Jane at St. Claires Coffee house at St. Francis by the Sea Church. Drinks available before the show.

All shows are free but, donations are suggested.
