Fort Macon New Year's Cannon Firing

Start New Year’s off with a bang at Fort Macon State Park. We will be ringing in the new year with the help of our three 32-pounder cannons with a special night firing demonstration.  The cannons will be fired at 7:00 pm to coincide with midnight in Greenwich England, which is the location all other time zones are set. We do not do night cannon shoots very often, so don’t miss out on this special opportunity.  It will be spectacular!

Because the cannons shoot across the park road, for safety the park gate will be closed promptly at 6:55 pm and no one will be allowed in or out until the program has concluded around 7:30. Please come early, dressed for the weather, and feel free to bring a small camp/beach chair. As a reminder, alcohol is not permitted in North Carolina’s State Parks. Note: If it is really cold the huge visitor center will be open to stay warm and you can walk down to the fort right before the firing. 252-726-3775

First Day Hike at Fort Macon

Start the New Year with some fresh air!  Join a Ranger at Fort Macon State Park and 'burn off' some of that holiday fruit cake.  Every North Carolina state park and recreation area is hosting a First Day Hike on January 1st.  At Fort Macon, we will be offering two hikes.  One will be an easy stroll around the nature trail and inlet beach.  The second hike option will be a 3 mile strenuous loop hike through the dunes from the visitor center to the bathhouse and then back to the visitor center.  The strenuous hike will be worth it when you see the breathtaking panoramic views that stretch all the way from the Cape Lookout lighthouse to Emerald Isle on a clear day.  So there will be a hike to fit everyone’s ability.

Both hikes will start at 9:00 a.m. on January 1st in the visitor center parking lot, and the event is weather dependent.  Please dress for the temperature, and remember to wear layers so you can remove a layer once you warm up during the hike.  Wind may also be a factor so a hat is recommended. 252-726-3775
