What could be more fun on a long cold winter evening, than joining a friendly group of folks for some contra dancing? ¬†What is contra dancing, you ask? ¬†Well, contra is a historic form of dance with a modern twist. ¬†The dance originated in Europe and migrated to the US where it took root in the Appalachian mountains. ¬†The music has a Celtic rhythm and dancers form long lines across from each other. ¬†A “caller” calls different moves and the dancers follow along, changing partners as the dance progresses. ¬†A learner’s session is held at the beginning, and the caller goes through the movements before each song – it has been said that if you can walk, you can contra dance!

The Down East FolkArts Society has been awarded a Grass Roots grant by the NC Arts Council and the Arts Council of Carteret County to partner with Carteret Community College in presenting this contra dance.  This will be held in the Bryant Student Center on the waterfront at the college, on Saturday, January 21, with the beginners session starting at 6:30.  The actual dance will last from 7 Р10 pm.  Admission is $10 for non-members, $8 for members and active military, and $5 for students.  Come join us for an entertaining and enjoyable evening!
