Down East FolkArts Society | A Contra Dance

3505 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC | (252) 633-6444

May 13, 2017 | 6:30 pm-9:00 pm

It is time to get out your dancing shoes and head over the Carteret Community College on Saturday, May 13 for the final contra dance of the season sponsored by Down East FolkArts Society.  Contra dancing originated in Europe and made its way to Appalachia with the immigrants who loved the rhythms and Celtic flavor of the music.  No partner is necessary, in fact it is expected that you will be dancing with many different people during the night.  A beginner’s session will be held from 6:30 – 7, and don’t worry, if you can walk you can contra dance!

The NC Council for the Arts, Carteret Arts Council, and Carteret Community College have partnered with Down East FolkArts to help keep this traditional form of dance alive for the enjoyment of our community.  A live band and caller add to the fun, and all you need to bring is comfortable shoes and a smile!  Join us at the Bryant Student Center on the waterfront at Carteret Community College in Morehead City.  Beginner’s session is at 6:30, dance is from 7 – 9 pm.  Admission is $10 general public, $8 members and active military, $5 students.
