Established for use during the Civil War, Fort Macon is now an active state park, offering public beach access, nature trails and picnic areas in addition to the maintained grounds and structures of this historical fortress.

The park is located at the eastern end of Atlantic Beach, making it easily accessible to visitors by car, bicycle, or an easy walk. Sitting at the very end of Bogue Banks, the land is surrounded by water on three sides, making this an attractive area for a day exploring on the sand.

The Fort facilities have been extremely well preserved and restored, and include educational exhibits and historical displays. Explore the grounds to learn how troops lived their daily lives here through various eras of our country’s history. You can also go on a tour with a State Park guide for even more information on the evolution of the fort since its Civil War beginnings.

Plus, stop by Fort Macon for one of their grand scale historical reenactments throughout the year, with live battles, costumed characters and cannons firing!
