“Down East” is so much more than a direction or a region – it’s a history and a heritage that we call “home.”
At the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center, visitors and locals alike can explore and celebrate the legacy of the Crystal Coast and Outer Banks, where both the waterfowl hunting tradition and the maritime industry have evolved and endured.
Located at the end of Harkers Island – adjacent to the Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center – this museum houses multiple, notable collections of waterfowl decoys and preserved carving tools, a large maritime industry exhibit, and an entire floor dedicated to the different communities of Core Sound.
In addition to the exhibits, visitors can also enjoy a specialized research library with an oral history database, a lookout tower with an incredible view of Cape Lookout Lighthouse, and nature trails exploring the surrounding area.
