Sponsored by the Crystal Coast Quilters' Guild.  The 30th annual judged Quilt Show, "Coastal Stars," will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 18th and 19th, 2012 at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, 3505 Arendell Street, Highway 70, Morehead City, NC. Hours for the quilt show will be: Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Admission to the Quilt Show is $6.00, with children under 12 years of age admitted free.

The 3rd Annual ARTrageous Art Show, sponsored by the Arts Council of Carteret County, will be held on the Morehead City Waterfront May 19-10, 2012—10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. More than 40 vendors will be displaying their art for sale—paintings, pottery, wood carving, and much more. There will be mural painting for children, art demonstrations, and a raffle for art prizes. Emerald Isle Parks & Recreation Department presents the 3^rd Annual 8K Road Race and 5k Fun Run will begin at 8am at the Eastern Ocean Regional Access at 2701 Emerald Drive.  The 8K course follows a simple out-and-back route from the access, briefly down Hwy. 58, and then along scenic Ocean Drive.  The 5K Fun Run will be noncompetitive and begin at 8:15am.  Packet pick-up for the will begin at 6:45am at the access and will end sharply at 7:30am. 

Registration forms and information for the race are available online at www.emeraldisle-nc.org.  Fees for the race are $15 before Friday, May 11^th and $20 through Thursday, May 17^th.  No registration will be accepted after Thursday, May 17^th.  The first 100 RACE (not Fun Run) entrants will receive a free t-shirt and awards will be presented to participants in seven different age categories in the 8k.  For more information contact 252.354.6350.

The Coast Guard presents its "Run Around The BLOCK Safe Boating 5K Race" on Saturday, May 26. Report to the Visitors Center at Fort Macon State Park, 2303 E. Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach. Croatan National Forest and North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are sponsoring a FREE kid's fishing day at Cedar Swamp Pond in Newport, NC.  Time: 8:00 am - Noon.

Tournament location: Western Ocean Regional Access, Islander Drive, Emerald Isle.  Time: 9:00 am until the last game is over.  This is an "open gender" series and players must be at least 16 years old.  Pre-registration is required (no game day registration).  Team fee is $55 per team with prize money going to the top two teams (70% to first place; 30% to second place).  Teams must bring their own ball and will act as officials when not playing.  Note: officiating may be required after elimination.  There are no rain dates and refunds will be issued for bad weather.  FIVB/EI beach rules apply.  For registration, payment and general information contact 252.354.6350.

Public field trips on the Rachel Carson component of the N.C. National Estuarine Research Reserve occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-10:30am during June, July and August. All programs are open and free to the public but reservations are required as boat space is limited. Call (252) 838-0883 to make reservations or for more information. The Reserve offers three types of field trips:

Nature hikes occur during low tides, when the most amount of land is exposed on the island. Be prepared to get your shoes wet and muddy. We require close-toed shoes because of the abundance of oysters on the island. You may also have the opportunity to swim on the nature hike, so dress accordingly. Boardwalk trips occur at high tide, when the water is high enough in the estuary for our 24' skiff to easily navigate around the island to our boardwalk located on Carrot Island.

Circumnavigation cruise on our 24' skiff around the Reserve allows visitors a chance to view Middle Marsh after a brief stop at the boardwalk.

On all three trips, we encourage you to bring sunglasses, hats, binoculars, water and sunscreen.

All field trips are free; however, we do accept donations for our nonprofit organization, Friends Of The Reserve (FOR)

A summer History Camp for children completing grades 2-6 is available June 18-22. Camp take place at the History Place in downtown Morehead City from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Local storyteller and historian, Rodney Kemp, and Museum Educator, Carol Smith, will fill campers with fun facts about Carteret County through tours, stories and songs. They will be assisted by museum volunteers as students learn research techniques in the History Place library and take part in other activities. Children should have a keen interest in history. Writing and reading skills are required.

Campers will form the Carteret County History Squad and will easily be spotted as they tour the county in their bright orange T-shirts. Campers will write daily in their journals, learn research skills and genealogy, hear and write historical stories and perform a play at the end of the week written by Rodney Kemp. The campers and parents will also have a special outing at Fort Macon State Park.

An old-fashioned tradition continues in historic Beaufort on July 4 with a parade on the downtown waterfront that includes: kids, pets, wagons, flags and lemonade stands. Parade begins at 11AM at the fire department, procedes through downtown along the waterfront.

The town of Emerald Isle will again present July 4th beginning at 9 pm on Wednesday, July 4^th.  Parking will be available at Bogue Inlet Pier as well as along NC 58 and nearby streets.  The fireworks will also be visible from Bogue Sound and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. 

The waterfront in Downtown Morehead City comes alive on the 4th of July with fireworks
and a street dance that follows. Over 5000 people enjoy the festivities. For more

Come out and join fellow neighbors and friends in an attempt to create a healthier lifestyle. Each walk will begin and end at the Emerald Isle Community Center with different routes walked each week; most walks will be 2-3 miles. Rain location will be the Emerald Isle Community Center gymnasium. This program is open to participants of all ages. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  Time: 6:00 pm.

NC’s 2^nd largest festival) drawing approximately 200,000 people to the Morehead City waterfront.  The Festival is a time of Celebration and Thanksgiving for our state’s greatest Natural Resource ~ SEAFOOD. There’s something for everyone including fireworks, live music on several stages, cooking competitions, art & crafts, sporting events, boat show & outdoor expo, not to mention seafood prepared in every imaginable way! Also, new this year the festival will be fully open to the public on Friday at Noon.

Three Family Fun Days will take place at Cape Lookout National Seashore this year. Family oriented programs will be held at the Harkers Island Visitor Center and the adjacent picnic area called Shell Point. These programs are designed to involve children and their families. Scouts, home-school groups and other organizations are asked to call ahead to help us plan for your group .

Critters of the Night: October 27, 2012 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

When the sun sets and many creatures are going to sleep, others are just waking up. Discover some of the mysterious animals which make the park come alive in the dark of the night. Live animals will be on display and others may be seen during the Night Hike. Critter named constellations will also be viewed on a screen and in the air. The evening will end with a fireside chat.

The Town of Emerald Isle will officially observe Halloween Trick or Treat on Wednesday, October 31st from 6-8:30pm. Please think SAFETY at all times when taking children Trick-or-Treating! Emerald Isle Christmas Parade sponsored by the Emerald Isle Business Association and the Town of Emerald Isle will take place on Saturday, November 23rd beginning at 3pm on Hwy 58, Emerald Drive. Important note to all entrants: There will be only ONE Santa Claus in the parade and he will be riding in a float at the end. All other Santa's will be sent back to the North Pole!
