One of the area's most prized natural reserves is the Rachel Carson Reserve named for the famed naturalist.

The N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores features a 300,000-gallon ocean tank plus exhibits and animals from across North Carolina. Mountain waterfalls, Piedmont rivers, coastal swamps, and offshore shipwrecks are some of the habitats. Three classrooms and a 150-seat auditorium can accommodate an expanded range of education programs and activities.
